Keyword selection is a very important process and is something that you do not want to overlook. I chose a diet plan to be my product for this example. Now to be specific the first thing that I noticed when I googled diet plan was something called a “Calorie Shifting Diet” plan so I will use this to find keywords. A free tool that I am going to use and I suggest you do the same is the Google Keyword Tool. To use it go to google and type in Google Keyword Tool and it should be at the top of the list. You will type in your keyword where it reads “Enter one keyword or phrase per line.” After selecting Get keyword ideas scroll down and you will see a list of words and the search results for those words you entered. Before we go on let me explain the difference between short tail and long tail keywords. Short tail keywords are usually very short and general so they will provide a high volume of searches such as “diet plan” which yields about 500,000 searches per month. Long tail keywords are more specific and will have a lower volume of searches per month for example the diet plan chosen “calorie shifting diet plan” which only yields about 1,500 searches per month. Now you might be thinking that you will want to only use short tail keywords because you will get more traffic, but that would be a huge mistake. You might be asking why right about now, the answer is because they are to general and the people doing these searches probably aren’t doing a whole lot of buying and your ultimate goal is to get people to buy what you have to offer. How do you do this by using more specific keywords targeted to your buyers. The 1,500 searches for “calorie shifting diet plan” may not be much but you know that the people searching for this are going to be ready to buy. We will use “calorie shifting diet plan” as are main keyword and expand a little to find more keywords related to this to increase your searches and ultimately your buyers. Use the keyword tool to help you. When you type in “calorie shifting” you will see that it has about 30,000 searches per month and is related to what you have to offer so that could be a another keyword. A few more that I quickly found were “diet meal plans” 18,000 searches, “healthy diet plan” 30,000 searches, “healthy diet plans” 7,000 searches. Now do the same with what you have to offer. I probably shouldn’t be saying this but another quick way you can get good keywords would be by going to blogs or websites of your competitors and viewing some of the tags they are using to get people to their site because I guarantee you that they have already done some research and are only using the keywords that are working, all you have to do is copy them and use them on your campaign. Another quick way to view the competition you have for your keywords is to enter them in “quotes” in a google search and the number of pages that shows up is an indication of how much competition you have with those keywords. Now that you get the idea about keywords selection you will want to put them to use in your marketing.
